Meet James

James has been part of the Hope’s Home family since joining as a toddler on September 1, 2022. He lives with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, seizures, and an Intellectual and Developmental Disability. Since his first days at Hope’s Home, James has shown incredible resilience, growth, and determination while building meaningful connections with those around him.

When James first arrived, staff supported him through daily therapies, including wearing a hand splint, something he initially resisted but quickly adapted to with determination. He also required support with mobility tasks such as navigating stairs, walking on uneven surfaces, and climbing play structures. Over time, James has made remarkable progress in many areas of his development.

One of the most meaningful changes has been his growth around mealtimes. When he first started at Hope’s Home, James would only eat crackers and bananas, specifically with the peel still attached. He also preferred eating alone away from the group. Today, James confidently joins his peers at the main table during meals and has become a much more adventurous eater.

James has also made incredible strides socially and emotionally. While he once preferred to be on his own, he has developed strong bonds with several classmates who now walk beside him when he needs support, read books with him, and sit with him during meals and story time. Though James is non-verbal, he has recently begun using picture-based communication to point and express his needs, an important milestone in helping him connect with others more independently.

Transitions, which were once a significant challenge for James, have also improved greatly over time. Starting a new classroom and beginning school this year were major milestones, and James adapted with incredible resilience. Where he once required several walks each day to help regulate feelings of overwhelm, he now benefits from a more balanced routine with occasional walks throughout the week.

James is known for his bright personality and the joy he brings into every room. He loves musical toys, spinning, jumping on the trampoline, and sharing laughter with those around him. His infectious smile and affectionate nature leave a lasting impression on everyone he meets.

Developmental Worker Charmaine reflects on her time with James as deeply meaningful, sharing that he has taught her patience, creative communication, and the importance of finding joy in everyday moments. She describes James as a loving child whose warmth and happiness have touched the hearts of staff, peers, and everyone lucky enough to know him.

James’ mom, Molly Hoeving, describes Hope’s Home as “more than just a daycare — it’s a family.” She shares that Hope’s Home has been a place of comfort, growth, inclusion, and support for both James and their family.

“It’s where passionate staff truly care about what they do, and where parents can find peace of mind and a stress-free break. It’s an extra set of eyes, ears, and knowledge during important medical appointments, ensuring nothing is overlooked. It’s a place of structure that helps create a better quality of life and lasting friendships. The staff at Hope’s Home don’t judge — they listen, teach, support, and advocate. For James, Hope’s Home is not just a daycare — it’s a second home.” 💛
