Job Summary.

Nurse Supervisors administer the mission, philosophy, and objectives of Hope’s Home. They are accountable for the management of all operational activities and staff in the Supportive Living program of Hope’s Home, including upholding the standards for nursing practice, recreational programs, therapeutic programs, staff development and accreditation.

Nurse Supervisors also manage and delegate work assignments to staff on the floor, which includes the supervising daily staffing ratios of Nurses, Developmental Workers and Recreational Programmers within the program. They also monitor the medical needs of all children in the program. Nurse Supervisors work in a team environment while maintaining consistent communications with the child’s outside professionals, in order to provide the exceptional care required to meet the evolving needs of each child with complex medical needs living at Hope’s Home.

Nurse Supervisors are accountable to the Senior Manager of Supportive Living, who reports to the Ministry of Social Services regarding individual contracts and licensing. House Manager will provide direct support to the Nurse Supervisor.

Responsibilities.

Managerial Duties

  • Participate in the hiring/termination and any other HR responsibilities regarding all staff employed within the supportive living location.
  • Participate in ensuring new staff receive comprehensive training, including but not limited to colour cards, review of the staff handbook, review of job description, roles and responsibilities, completion of new hire package, and a tour of the facilities.
    • Training should be planned and delegated in accordance with Hope’s Home policies and procedures over a period of two (2) weeks.
    • Training will consist of split orientation and floor training.
  • Assist in supervising all staff employed within the supportive living location.
  • Participate in the performance evaluation and progressive discipline process of all staff employed within the supportive living location.
  • Responsible for long-term scheduling of all staff employed within the supportive living location.
  • Assist in providing coaching and mentoring to communicate expectations and goals, build accountability, and motivate performance.
  • Assist in overseeing nursing department meetings and provide input.
  • Participate in Direct Report and team meetings.
  • Participate in transitioning and supporting staff through grief and loss.
  • Remain on-call for all scheduled days to assist staff with questions and/or work in place of floor staff if unable to fill vacant shifts (Flex Time is permitted if hours worked is over 160 in a 4-week period).
  • Monitor the development and implementation of program activities as developed by the Recreational Programmers and manage programming on the floor.
  • Communicate with Social Workers regarding care of children residing in supportive living, which shall include but not be limited to quarterly reports and communication of minor and major occurrences. Responsible for attending quarterly meetings.
  • Participate in financial budget preparation duties.

Nursing Duties

  • Act as a floor nurse when necessary to ensure proper ratios.
  • Maintain adequate floor staffing ratios.
  • Provide a holistic approach of health and healing along with nursing care for children with complex medical needs.
  • Provide medical orientation to newly hired, non-nursing staff.
  • Assist in physical assessments of children.
  • Ensure children’s charts are complete and up to date.
  • Develop and maintain care plans and collaborate with staff and/or external professionals when required.
  • Ensure care plans are complete, current, and being followed appropriately.
  • Responsible for attending children’s clinic meetings and/or appointments with physician(s), specialist(s) or any other outside practitioner providing care or treatment to the children, or, if unable to attend, delegating attendance to another nurse within the supportive living location.
  • Advocate for the required health care needs of all Hope’s Home children.
  • Regularly maintain emergency equipment and make available in accordance with the Hope’s Home rules and regulations.
  • Prepare portable emergency equipment and outing bags when necessary and as required.
  • Oversee infection control in the Supportive Living Program.
  • Complete reports for medication errors, unusual occurrences, and minor injuries.
  • Oversee and evaluate quality control methods, and licensing body standards.
  • Oversee therapeutic programs.
  • Perform admission rounds.
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities for when a child is admitted and for when a child is discharged.
  • Maintain and monitor appointment logs.
  • Collaborate with nurses for education and training.
  • Oversee students and monitor and evaluate their work performance.

General Operational Duties

  • Act as a floor supervisor when necessary to ensure proper ratios.
  • Act as the primary contact for general inquires, sick calls, and emergency calls.
  • Maintain the staffing and operational expenditures in accordance with the annual budget allocated to the Supportive Living program.
  • Oversee quality control for policy and procedure, checklists, and emergency protocols.
  • Communicate and build rapport with external stakeholders:
    • Ministry of Social Services
    • Physicians
    • Pharmacies
    • Early Childhood Intervention Program
    • CNIB Foundation
    • Saskatchewan Health Authority
  • Conduct monthly Fire and Emergency Drills.
  • Monitor and track equipment and supplies.
  • Facilitate split visits and tours of the supportive living location.

Qualifications.

  • Current licensing as required for Practical Nursing, Registered Nursing or Registered Psychiatric Nursing.
  • Minimum Diploma as Licensed Practical Nursing with additional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of managerial experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with different behavioral/physical disorders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and compassionately with medically fragile children.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills.
  • Sense of professionalism, leadership; awareness and appreciation of diversity.

  • Physical ability to perform and safely work with objects or persons of varying sizes:
    • Exertion of ~100 lbs of force occasionally.
    • Exertion of ~50 lbs of force regularly.
    • Exertion of ~25 lbs of force continuously.
